We are enjoying time on the Lower Mississippi River. And, wow, the river is LOW! It is typical for it to be low water during this time of year, but it is especially low right now due to widespread low rainfall across the drainage basin. This is the fourth consecutive year of low-water issues in the autumn season. Thankfully, we are still going to all of the usual ports of call (sometimes with alternate landings or docks) and the guests are experiencing this fascinating region. We are currently cruising aboard a Civil War themed cruise on American Cruise Lines' American Symphony, and Bill's presentations on "The Pathway to the Civil War" and "The Civil War Anaconda Plan" the past few days were packed! So, since we're on the subject...

With Veteran's Day coming this Tuesday, November 11, today we take a moment to honor our veterans.

HISTORY HIGHLIGHTS OF VETERANS DAY

Veterans Day is a United States federal holiday observed annually on November 11. It is a day for honoring military veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. It was originally known as Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War I.

The first recorded use of the term "Veterans Day" was in 1947 in Birmingham, Alabama when World War II veteran Raymond Weeks organized a "National Veterans Day." A parade and other festivities were held on November 11 of that year to honor all veterans. In 1954, Congress passed a bill to change Armistice Day to Veterans Day and President Eisenhower signed it, officially proclaiming November 11 as Veterans Day. Raymond Weeks, known now as the "Father of Veterans Day," received the Presidential Citizens Medal in November 1982.
