You may think I am crazy to publish two books in two months. But it's a concept I've been working on for almost a year. I am so excited to share the cover of my next History Highlights book. This book began as I was researching my "United States Expansion" book. Each chapter of that book shares the story of a different region of expansion that shaped our territorial map. But I also kept noticing a pattern of evolving national identity shaped by remarkable events.

I began to realize that there were two parts to our national development. One was the physical expansion of our territory and the other was the evolution of a national identity. Some events celebrated American accomplishments. Others exposed a contrast between American ideals and American reality. Together, they became something larger: public conversations about what it meant to be American. Over the next few weeks, I'll share some of my favorite stories from the book.

FREE MISSISSIPPI RIVER BOOK

As the young United States acquired the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, the acquisition of control of the entire Mississippi River basin, with it 200+ tributary rivers, provided the United States with a vast infrastructure of navigable rivers stretching from the Rockies to the Appalachians. The mainstem Mississippi River collected those rivers to the port of New Orleans and the ocean-going vessels that connected to global trade. The river has served as an avenue of expansion and commerce then and now. if you are financially unable to support our work, we still want you to enjoy these stories, so this weekend, we are offering our Mississippi River Then and Now book for free.
