Hello History Enthusiasts! We have just finished a wonderful couple of weeks cruising the Columbia and Snake Rivers aboard the American Song. A lovely guest (who prefers to remain anonymous) shared this photo taken as we performed during a stunning sunset. What a joy! We are enjoying a break at home before heading east to speak and perform on the Hudson River. What an adventure! We'll be sure to share some highlights and photos. FREE eBOOK SUNDAY/MONDAY: "Pathway to the Civil War" Amazon is running a bit slow on promotion approvals. So, we'll pivot this week and offer our book giveaways for Sunday and Monday. As the nation expanded westward and the Mississippi River became the great artery of American commerce, prosperity, and ambition, the United States also drifted steadily toward division. Pathway to the Civil War explores the dramatic decades when political compromise began to fail, sectional tensions deepened, and the future of the nation itself hung in the balance. From the Missouri Compromise and the rise of the abolition movement to the explosive debates over slavery’s expansion into the western territories, this book follows the mounting conflicts that gradually pushed the country toward war. Filled with powerful personalities, pivotal events, and the growing emotional intensity of the era, this engaging history brings readers into one of the most consequential periods in American history in just 100-pages. Along the way, you’ll encounter figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Stephen A. Douglas, and John Brown, while witnessing how debates over states’ rights, slavery, expansion, and economics slowly transformed political disagreements into a national crisis. It’s the story of a nation on the edge—and the long road that led to civil war. Pathway to the Civil War Amazon Book Review: Most engaging book on one of the essential events of American history: well written summary.
Highly recommended for a quick refresher of the background of the path to the American Civil War. One should study history to help prevent "history from repeating itself". If one has not reflected on this tragic war for awhile, this relatively brief, but most informative book is highly recommended. Amazing how a large group of American's tolerated slavery, and even justified it. Amazing that a large number of people worked hard and at risk, to abolish this terrible institution. Author Wiemuth has a great passion for history, and a great gift for getting to the heart of the issue and engaging the reader. -- Robert Dreyer
