MEMORIAL DAY HISTORY HIGHLIGHTS This weekend, we pause to honor the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Memorial Day was created to honor and mourn the military personnel who have died in the performance of their military duties while serving in the United States Armed Forces. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, "Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) — established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared it should be May 30. It is believed the date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country." In 1971, Congress standardized the holiday as "Memorial Day" and changed its observance to the last Monday in May. In 2000, a National Moment of Remembrance was added to Memorial Day. This asks all Americans at 3 pm at their local time to pause for one minute to remember those who have died in military service to the United States. "A Salute to Veterans with Laura & Bill." In honor of those lost and all of our brave veterans, would like to share with you a musical tribute video that we created for our Mississippi River Virtual Cruise. Super overview of Mark Twain's life. What a great way to get an overview of Mark Twain's life. I had known he had been a riverboat pilot. I did not know how much he loved it and the role it played in so many of his writings. I highly recommend this book. - C. Smith
